P6 (Courtney) describe the health and safety measures, to be taken, to ensure personal safety and that of others when attending an emergency incident, with reference to the relevant health & safety legislation.

Personal safety is crucial when responding to an emergency incident. It is vital you have the correct equipment with you to be able to attend and deal with an incident. Safety measures need to be made to ensure others are protected from danger. Protocols need to be followed to allow this to happen. An emergency incident might mean evacuating an area and providing temporary accommodation. Rest centres may need to be set up, food and bedding provided and information given to anxious relatives

However the first priority is to make sure their own safety comes first as they wouldn’t be able to complete a task if they became ill or were injured whilst carrying out the rescue. For example if a fire fighter did not make sure that he had sufficient oxygen in their breathing apparatus and it ran out whilst he was in a smoke filled building then he could possibly lose his own life as well as the lives of the people trapped in the building. In addition to this every week the fire Service check the vehicle is safe to drive and that there isn't anything faulty with it.

Furthermore the same applies to the police force, if an officer was injured he/she would be unable to follow out an arrest as it would be putting he/she in danger and it could result to more severe injuries, And the possible suspect could escape from arrest, also police officers need to be trained correctly on how to arrest a suspect correctly and safely.

The Ambulance service have to make sure they have all the correct  equipment and that the medication is up to date and in date so that they wouldn’t be giving the wrong medication out , they also have to undergo training in health and safety and once they have they are responsible if accidents happen.
